Literacy and Computer Learning Center

On March 29, 2009 El Centro de Amistad Inc. celebrated its first graduating class during an Open House event for its Literacy and Computer Learning Center. The center is located at 566 S. Brand Blvd., San Fernando California 91340. The Learning Center was built and developed from grants and donations by UPS, Kaiser-Permanente, The Verizon Foundation, The City of San Fernando and Assembly member Felipe Fuentes. Nineteen students were recognized through certificates by Senator Alex Padilla’s representative Mr. Angel Barnuevo, Jr.
Representatives from Assembly member, Felipe Fuentes, Speaker of the Assembly, Karen Bass, represented by Ms. Tessa Charnofsky, and Amy Wiese, Kaiser Permanente, Dr. Tomas Martinez, Pepperdine University, Board President Mr. Rich Golisch, and Executive Director, Mr. Ed Viramontes, participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony.
This program is designed to assist the children of low-income families between first and fifth grade who live in the local area and may have difficulty in literacy and the English language. Many of the families have parents who are monolingual Spanish-speaking. The 12 computer learning stations provide learning in reading, vocabulary and mathematics. Academic tutoring and homework assistance are intended to improve academic performance in their schools. A children’s reading library is also provided. Donations in and school supplies are gladly accepted. Enrollment is limited.
